Here and There 14.–20.12.

As part of Here and There project, Onur Tayranoğlu appeared as a character called "stranger" in Mänttä on 31st October, enlisting the help of Mäntän Lukio students to navigate and get familiar with the art town. By using a fictional narrative as an organizing framework, Onur has performed several public interventions in Mänttä since the beginning of their residency period as the stranger, aiming to meet the residents in performative situations. As it is expected, the mysterious appearance of the stranger has caused curiosity within the public. Seeking for a welcoming environment, the stranger has attempted to become friends with Mäntän Lukio students through 4 weekly gatherings. During the gatherings, the students were addressed as the guides helping the stranger to navigate in Mänttä. Here and There project is soon resulting in a mini-exhibition to share the stranger's eventful period of wandering. The exhibition will be showcasing traces of the overall performative process of the stranger trying to navigate in the town, as well as an installation imagined to be a home of the stranger in Mänttä made in collaboration with the students. The exhibition will open on Thursday 14th at 15.00 with a performative presentation taking place at 15.30. Opening dates and hours: Thursday, 14 December 2023, 15.00-18.00. Kettuki ry. artist of the year Riina Noro Ökömönkäinen's rights The exhibition is related to ancient cultures/forest, imagination and whether everyone is allowed to think. Opening on Friday 21.4. from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m The exhibition is open from 22 to 29 April. 12:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. (not on Monday) In her works, Riina Noro combines various visual art methods extensively and without prejudice. In textile sculptures and paintings, wildly different types emerge: people, animals and hybrids. She deals with current and social themes without forgetting the individual's point of view in the middle of all the spin. "Through making art, I create a similar peculiar thinking ability to find my things by studying them and bring out what I was created for. Making art means research work on paper and presenting interests. Making art is about bringing out interests and it secretly teaches me about this world," she says. Noro has worked in the Autism Foundation's Vallila art studio since 2013. She has had two solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Finland. Noro belongs to the Helsinki artists' society, the Vautsi theater group and the Sininen Sirkus artist collective. Free entry!

Voiko kotikaupungiksi kutsua paikkaa, jossa asut kolme kuukautta elämästäsi? Missä kotipaikkasi on, jos sekä paikka että koti ovat vain mielikuvituksessasi? Mänttää kuvaavien akvarellitöiden rinnalla esillä oli mielikuvitukseen, myytteihin ja tosiasioihin perustuvia teoksia, jotka kuvaavat siirtolaisuuden kokeneen perheen historiaa.

19.11. Maria Fonzino: When You Are Not There tanssiperformanssi

The dance performance When You Are Not There by Italian dance artist and choreographer Maria Fonzino, who lives in Paris, originated during the corona pandemic. The choreography is based on correspondence between Maria and four mothers. In their letters, they described their misery caused by isolation and loneliness. From these letters and movement descriptions originated the work to be performed at the residency. The work is performed by Maria and alongside Marjo Örn, a choreographer and dance teacher from Jämsä with her dance students.

Dutch artist couple Iris Honderdos and Arno Peeters have been working on their community-based project together with the prisoners of the near-by Vilppula Open Prison they have created the work Lifeline which was first shown to the public on the yard of the open prison on October 29 at 5 pm.

Kaamos on pimeyden, pysähtyneisyyden, hiljaisuuden ja rauhan sekä arktisen valon, tarinankerronnan, mietiskelyn ja levon aikaa. Erään saamelaiskertomuksen mukaan aurinko lepää tuolloin pesässä kuin muna. Kaamos tarkoittaa myös mielentilaa, jota on vaikea sietää ja jota käytetään myös synonyyminä talviajan masennukseen suomalaisessa kulttuurissa. Härkönen esittää taiteessaan sisäisiä tuntemuksia ei-esittävän muodon kautta. Tämän näyttelyn teemana on melankolia. Härkönen kuvailee residenssissä maailmanlaajuisen pandemian aikana valmistuneiden teosten taustoja: ”Tällaisessa tilanteessa työskentelyni hakee turvaa veistosten selkeistä geometrisista muodoista ja maalausten ennalta-arvaamattomista sommitelmista, joiden tarkoitus on jäsentää pahoinvointi niin, että siitä voi selviytyä”.

Krister Gråhn and Hannamari Matikainen: Anew 5.-23.8.

Kuvataiteilijat Hannamari Matikainen (s. 1976) ja Krister Gråhn (s. 1979) ovat työskennelleet yhdessä eri projekteissa vuodesta 2002 lähtien. Uudelleen-näyttelyssä nähdään merkkihenkilöiden rintakuvia ja kuvataiteen tunnettuja teoksia silikonivedoksina toteutettuna. Matikainen ja Gråhn ovat kehittäneet tekniikan, jossa veistoksista tai ihmisistä otettu silikonivalu on litistetty ja sen jälkeen vedostettu paperille. Lopputuloksena on samaan aikaan tuttuja ja jännittäviä kuvia, joissa vakiintuneet aiheet saavat uuden paikan ja merkityksen taiteen historiassa.

Janne Laine: Reaching for the Light 8.7.-2.8.

Tamperelainen, Mänttään työhuoneensa tänä keväänä muuttanut Janne Laine (s. 1970) on Suomen merkittävimpiä taidegraafikoita. Hänen teoksensa ovat useimmiten hiljaisia maisemia, joiden tunnelma syntyy alkuvoimaisen luontonäkymän, veden, höyryn, tumman kiven, varjon ja valon yhdistelmästä. Monet kuva-aiheet hän on löytänyt toiseksi kotimaakseen kutsumastaan Islannista. Yhä useammin Laine on löytänyt inspiraatiota myös suomalaisesta kuusimetsästä ja värikkäistä niittymaisemista. Hänen tekniikkansa on valokuvapohjainen heliogravyyri tai polymeerigravyyri.

Hannun Lukin: Carmen in the Garden 6.-28.6.

Visual artist and art educator Hannu Lukin (b. 1963) is renowned for his powerful and expressive paintings in which he has captured rapid observations of his surroundings. Lukin’s paintings often have a strong feeling of presence and they seem to tell a story. Lukin fills the Serlachius Residency Gallery with colourful paintings made in Spain, Italy and Portugal as well as his hometown Liminka, Finland. Most of the paintings are on show for the first time. Lukin and his daughter Sofia will reside at the Serlachius Residency stays in June and July.

The premier of Leena Pukki’s work Jää hyvästi, mummola (Farewell Granny’s place) 6 Jan 2019 was presented at Serlachius Museum Gösta’s Kivijärvi hall. Artist Leena Pukki stayed in Serlachius Residency in 2016. The work depicts how the grandparents of the artist move from the rural area to the centre of a small town. It is about getting old, self-determination, family ties, trauma, caring, attachment to a certain place and generations’ different opinions.

Artist and lecturer Christopher Taylor (USA) has been keen to examine father’s role in Finnish families. During the Friday coffee he organised a short drawing workshop for the children. David Waterworth (UK) collects images and short stories about every-day objects. Why for someone wool slippers are symbols for the Serlachius Museums?
